Amateur Radio

Radio Equipment
The Beaverton Emergency Radio Service “BEARS” provides critical ham radio emergency communications for Beaverton Emergency Management should all other forms of normal communications fail.

During a disaster, communications throughout Washington County and to state officials in Salem are essential. Using state of the art amateur radio equipment located at the Beaverton Emergency Operations Center, “BEARS” volunteers maintain the ham radio system at the EOC, and coordinate with the Beaverton CERT Teams. These radio operators participate in Simulated Emergency Tests at the local and state level.

“BEARS” Training and Qualifications

“BEARS” volunteers are typically members of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), a national organization with 75 years of public service during disasters. ARES members are required to go through disaster management training provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and others. Other participating amateur radio operators will need to participate in the same training.
